    CAUSE AND EFFECT

The Battle of Canceron, it would eventually be called. The Battle for Canceron was more like it ... the first battle in the Cylon War where the Colonials not only inflicted heavy damage on their mechanical foes, they actually forced their retreat from an entire frakking planet.

The giddiness after the long, grueling fight was thus more than understandable, particularly where the Cancerons themselves were concerned. Saner heads both on the ground and on the three battlestars in orbit figured that they had 48 hours to let the celebratory insanity reign before they had to prepare for consequences and new battles. 48 hours would allow the populace of a grateful planet the chance to fete their heroes, both their own ground-pounders and the crews of the Atlantia, Columbia and Galactica, who had distinguished themselves so well.

And amongst all the soldiers in the massive battle, none had distinguished themselves more than a certain hotshot pilot named Lieutenant William "Husker" Adama.

Being a pilot held a certain cachet to begin with. That set of wings Viper jocks wore was certain to start gleams of admiration in the eyes of either gender, but when Husker's flight mates started circulating stories about the lunatic maneuvers he'd used to rack up a record number of raider kills, Bill soon found himself at the center of an ongoing circle of attention. It moved with him from bar to bar, and while no one in a uniform was even allowed to pay for their alcohol that night, he was presented with an ongoing stream of drinks, cigars, card games and fascinated female company without making any effort whatsoever.

That didn't mean he wasn't surprised when it happened.

Antigone DIDN’T drink. Ask anyone. She stuck to juice and to water. She HATED the taste of alcohol. But tonight…

“OOH! It’s MY turn,” she said, practically slurring her words as she polished off her third- (fourth?!) drink and stumbled headed for the stage.

She took the microphone from the man and adjusted herself until she was standing center stage in the middle of the karaoke bar. Peering out into the darkness she could BARELY see the dark head out there and she gave a cheerful wave. Having given her request on a slip of paper to the DJ almost thirty minutes before, she was TOTALLY ready for this.

The opening notes of the song played and she put a serious!business look on her face.

You walked into the party like you were walking onto a yacht
Your hat strategically dipped below one eye
    Your scarf it was apricot
You had one eye in the mirror as you watched yourself gavotte
And all the girls dreamed that they'd be your partner
    They'd be your partner, and....

She burst into a huge smile, not slurring her words at ALL.

You're so vain, you probably think this song is about you
You're so vain, I'll bet you think this song is about you
    Don't you? Don't you?

Really into what she was doing now, she began swaying her hips and really getting into the song. By the last verse, she was practically giggling and completely not caring who saw what.

But you gave away the things you loved, and one of them was me...

She summoned a drink to the corner where she had perched herself after the last chorus and lifted it to her lips, taking a drink before the last bit.

Well I hear you went up to Saratoga and your horse naturally won
Then you flew your Lear jet up to Nova Scotia to see the total eclipse of the sun
Well, you're where you should be all of the time
And when you're not you're with
Some underworld spy or the wife of a close friend
Wife of a close friend, and....
You're so vain, you probably think this song is about you...

At the end, to some applause, she took a deep bow and headed back to her seat where she polished off what could have been her fifth drink. She wasn’t counting any more since she couldn’t taste the alcohol any more.

”That was fun, I wanna go again!” She exclaimed. Her companion broke out into laughter.

“Oh, Annie. If I’d have known getting you drunk was going to be THIS much fun, I’d have done it years ago.”

Anne just laughed. Breaking up was hard to do, but not when Auntie Eris was around

[insanejournal.com profile] antigone_grace: I know that in light of recent events you may find this hard to believe, but from the moment you sent me home that first night? I knew I wanted to spend the rest of your life with you. And though I've been trying to get rid of the husband I have for the last nine months, if I WERE to get married again, Sam? It would have been to you.
[insanejournal.com profile] wnchestrgeekboy: You won't let me marry you.

[insanejournal.com profile] antigone_grace: Can I ask you one more question first?

[insanejournal.com profile] antigone_grace: Is there a reason you're in a hurry to marry me now?

[insanejournal.com profile] antigone_grace: You love the baby, you're angry with me and I should have said goodbye to Nicholas the right way a very long time ago. I'm sorry I didn't. Now you feel obligated to me in ways you shouldn't and I feel horrible for lying and there is a party you have to set up for. I shouldn't keep you.

It's while laying on the cool tile of the very spacious bathroom on the second floor of the Winchester's spacious mansion that it dawns on Antigone.

She's an awful girlfriend. If not now, then she will be soon. She will soon be the worst girlfriend to ever girlfriend and the thought fills her with another bout of nausea that has nothing to do with the tiny pea lodged in her uterus.

Speaking of the pea-sized thing, she's terrified of that, too. Before, she had a certain knowledge that things would be perfect. She didn't fear for the infant thing that would appear from her body. She knew then that it would be the perfect combination of her and Anteros and that it would, if not love her (because she wondered if Erastos did), but follow some kind of respect and that would be that. But now? Now she has to worry if, in her mortal state, she's going to disappoint Sam with something less than the perfection he deserves. If, and here terror sets in, her child will cause her pain. Will hurt her. Not just physically, but emotionally as well.

Not only that, her mind continues without her permission as she rolls over to get more comfortable, but she's reminded that she can't cook (her one attempt at a ham from scratch ended in the near fatal fire at her New Jersey house) and she has a wardrobe that consists of two dresses and a tank top. Nothing to go on her backside.

She feels tears spring to her eyes and she wipes them with one hand. No matter what Psyche says, no matter what her father says, there is nothing she wouldn't have done to spare Sam the heartache of losing his father. That includes going through the humiliation of being the worst girlfriend ever. Naked, if need be.

[insanejournal.com profile] antigone_grace: Can you blame him? Although, I'm not sure mortality suits ME, Aunt Eris.
[insanejournal.com profile] kallisti_eris: Considering you DIED the last time you were mortal, Annie darling, I'd say it's terrible on you.
[insanejournal.com profile] antigone_grace: Was that the last time or the time before?
[insanejournal.com profile] kallisti_eris: I thought it was the last, although perhaps it was the time before. In either case, I'd rather have a live niece than a dead one, so do be careful this time around. I hate having to talk with the Fates and their six word riddles.
[insanejournal.com profile] antigone_grace: The last was the TARDIS, the time before was Loki and his stupid plan and thieving MY SHELL.

The sun beat down on the sidewalk, a beautiful New York day. Helen strolled down the sidewalk on her way to the precinct with a smile on her face. She tilted her head back, eyes closed, to bask in the bright warmth that flowed down. Apollo had been good to her, today of all days, and she practically skipped down the street. The low-heeled sandals she wore to compliment her jeans were just high enough to make a bit of a clacking sound as she sauntered along.

Dark. It was very, very dark and Antigone liked it that way.

Her house was what she was on all occasions and tonight, unlike most nights, it was dark. Not her mood, but the emptiness, the loneliness. Her dress was traditional, the chiton she wore draped perfectly across her curves. Her hair was twisted atop her head as it did when she felt at her most formal. When she felt the need to connect with who she truly, deeply was.

The downstairs rooms lightened slightly from no visible source, then darkened again, as she meandered through them, her fingertips trailing along the furniture that was both ancient and new. One hand palmed the wall gently, the wallpaper changing appropriately and she smiled without humor. The house was so intriguing. Her father had bought it for her and it was odd that something inanimate could sense her moods and respond accordingly without her trying. It was a piece of home she was grateful to have, if nothing else came with her.

Moving down the long hall to the tallest staircase, she paused for a moment, taking a deep breath that wasn't needed. Subsequent breaths came slowly as she pondered the last few days since the arrival of John Winchester. Dean's excitement, Sam's completely opposite reaction.

It was as she climbed the stairs that the memory came to her, unbidden. The Doctor had taken her to see Elvis Presley after nearly getting her hanged as a witch in Salem. Overhearing him speak, something he'd said had stayed with her for a very long time and now, well, now she sat down on the top stair to whisper it into the darkness.

"Don't criticize what you don't understand, son." She imitated his twang with perfect clarity. "You never walked in that man's shoes."

Resting her hand on her chin, Anne remembered her talk with Bobby and how she had, for the briefest moment, become her mother combined with the brattiness of her youth. Fix it, she'd said. Something her mother had always told her father and something she had often said to Anton.

Anne shook her head as she stood and continued her walk to the large master suite. With her heart at it's darkest, feeling more alone than she had since James' death, she paused before easing down onto the seat of her vanity.

Even without light, her reflection was clear and she could see her mother there, her father and all those she knew and loved. So far and yet-

Without any gesture from Antigone, there was a faint burst of light and there, in the darkness next to her was her tiara. Spinning slowly, it hovered just in front of her and she watched it move without a sound. Reaching out, she touched it with a fingertip and felt the contours of the diamonds and white gold move under her finger as it continued to spin.

She closed her eyes and remembered.

Anteros, Daddy, Zeus, Apollo, the War, hiding, being hidden, interference and nothing being 'fixed' followed by loving Sam, identifying with Dean, being friends with Bela... understanding Bobby.

Anne watched the tiara for a moment more and just before it disappeared, she swore she saw the beaches of Troy reflected in her mirror. She stood and draped herself across the bed, the canopy lowering just a smidge before she glared at it.

Closing her eyes, she murmured, "Ant?"

There was a soft dip in the bed before a responding murmur next to her ear, "Princess?"

Antigone smiled, eyes still closed. "I love him. I wanted to fix this for him."

"You knew that he was the only one who could fix it." The warm breath against her ear caused her to shiver and she resisted the urge to curl up next to nothing. She did, however, nod. The voice continued. "You always meddle."

Her smile grew. "A flaw in my character."

"One of many," came the teasing response. "What you see as normal, isn't. Everyone has their flaws. Including him. Including all of them."

Anne's smile faded. "I know. I think I'll just stay here until it blows over."

"You are brilliant." Lips against her ear before brushing her cheek. "Not all meddling is bad. Not everything can be fixed. You've never walked in their shoes."

She thought about that for a long moment. "I'm not sure I want to, now."

"You cannot change who you are simply by mere thought." Lips brushed the corner of her mouth.

Anne sighed and nodded, feeling herself nod off. "Stay."

When she woke, there was no one there.

    Ten cryptic messages.

ONE) I hate you. I hate you more for making me love you because I can't ever get rid of that completely. The problem with living forever is I'll always remember how you looked when you loved ME. It makes me sick to my stomach to think how you touched me and how you tricked me. How you USED me. I really hope that one day, thousands of years from now, I'll be able to treat you with the same indifference you treat me.

TWO) As much as I love you, for everything that you are to me, I don't know that I'll ever be able to forgive you for not telling me the truth about you and HIM.

THREE) You're despicable. You can't help it, we're all what we are, right? Can't hate the sun for being hot or water being wet, and yet... I do.

FOUR) I love you. I'm afraid that one day it'll fade into fondness.

FIVE) You don't know how important you are to me and what I'd give to give you what you want most: Her.

SIX) I need you again. Somehow, somewhere... I've gained it back and it's killing me.

SEVEN) As much as I loved you when I wasn't what I am? We're better apart. You have her back and I'm glad I could bring her to you.

EIGHT) I need you back. There's no one else. No one to talk to, no one to confide in. Dean can only handle so much girl-talk in a day.

    NINE) I miss you.

TEN) Find Earth, come see me. I worry about you, dear Friend.
    antigone_grace: (Perfect)
    1) are your parents married or divorced?
    Neither.

    2) vegetarian?
    I enjoy vegetables very much.

    3) heaven?

    4) come close to dying?
    Have died.

    5) what jewelry do you wear?
I wasn't wearing any when I appeared here.

    6) are you eating?
    Currently? No.

    7) do you eat the stems of broccoli?
    Of course.

    8) makeup?
    No

    9) virgin?
No, and what an ordeal THAT was.
